The Châtelard compensation basin is a gravity-type artificial structure covered with 6 centimetres of bitumen. It is located on the Franco-Swiss border.
It serves as a buffer basin between the Vallorcine and La Bâtiaz power plants. Its usable volume is 90,000 m³. It has a drawer valve type bottom drain valve. It is used, among other things, to empty the basin during cleaning and also to rinse the black water bed when cleaning the Esserts reservoir.
