The majority of Swiss hydropower-producing companies are organised in the form of “ partnership companies ”.
What is a partnership company?
Numerous hydropower plants were constructed in the Swiss Alps in the 50s and 60s. The construction costs of the largest projects exceeded the financial capacities of a single company or a canton. The risks were also too great to bear alone. This is why the stakeholders regrouped into a partnership.
These companies are generally incorporated as public limited companies. Their shareholders are mainly electricity producers, electricity distributors with end customers, cantons and municipalities as well as SBB.
The purpose of a partnership company is to produce electricity for its shareholders and to share the costs of key investments. The energy is marketed directly by the shareholders. In return, they bear all the costs of the partnership company.
