Bâtiaz power plant

The Bâtiaz hydropower plant is of a traditional type and situated in Martigny in Valais at 462 metres of altitude and was built in 1975.

The location of the Bâtiaz hydropower plant in Valais was chosen carefully while taking into account various parameters such as the high level of the water table and the specific geological conditions of the site.

The Bâtiaz hydropower plant is equipped with two 95MW vertical units, a drop of 659.5m achieving a flow of 35m³/s, each comprising an alternator and a Pelton turbine. An expansion basin and a buried tailrace measuring 1.3 km in length discharge the water from the turbines into the Rhône.

The facility is monitored and controlled remotely starting from the Bâtiaz hydropower plant, including the highly complex Vallorcine complex. The facility can achieve an operational electrical capacity of 420 MW and 80 MW of pumped power.

Unit 2 was first put into operation on 18 January 1973.
Electricité d'Emosson SA is connected to the 220 kV major transmission grid on two East-West and North-South axes, including an international Switzerland-France link, and from 2022 will be directly connected to the 400 kV THT grid.
